Sailing Resume Guide

To qualify as a bareboat charter skipper, most charter companies require a sailing resume in addition to meeting minimum certification standards. The purpose of a sailing resume is to showcase your sailing and boating experience, ensuring the safety of your crew and the protection of the vessel. If you don't already have a sailing resume, it's worth taking the time to create one. It will streamline the reservation process at all charter companies and will help you acquire insurance if you ever decide to purchase your own boat.

All time spent on the water, regardless of the size of the vessel, is valuable when you're involved in its operation. Personally, I use a Google Sheet to log all my time on the water. I suggest creating separate columns for the dates, location, distance traveled, boat size/type, and your role as either skipper or crew.

As a charter company, we want to know specific details about your experience before booking you as a bareboat skipper on one of our vessels:

  1. What sailing certifications do you have? (i.e. ASA 114 and higher or USCG captains license)

  2. How much sailing experience do you have?

  3. How much sailing experience do you have on a similar-sized vessel as the one you want to charter?

  4. How recent is your experience listed above?

These are the minimum requirements needed to bareboat charter our vessels:

  1. USCG license and/or ASA 114 Certification

  2. Thirty (30) days of boating experience on a similar-sized vessel as a Skipper within the last 5 years

  3. Fourteen (14) days as a Skipper on a similar-sized catamaran in the last 2 years

OR students who have completed West Coast Multihulls/Blue Pacific Yachting's ASA 114 course in the last 6 months and have been signed off by our ASA Instructor

OR successful completion of a WCM/BPY Refresher Course
